THE COURSE

Rodeo Dunes represents a return to Coore and Crenshaw’s design roots. The rolling, sandy site is reminiscent of their remarkable Sand Hills Golf Club (Mullen, NE), the course that launched the architectural duo’s career and the minimalist genre of course design.

As they did at Sand Hills, Coore and Crenshaw have diligently whittled away at the property to capture the very best 18-hole routing, working in, around, and over dunes up to 90-feet tall.

Coore calls the land, “some of the most gifted we’ve ever come across.”. Coore notes that the contours of the land provide such a natural canvas that fairways and greens need very little shaping. The course will be largely built by hand, as the links of Scotland and Ireland were centuries ago.

“It is truly a very special site, really quite remarkable,” Coore adds. “Michael Keiser found a great site at Sand Valley, and now he has done it again.”

BILL COORE & BEN CRENSHAW

For nearly two decades, the design team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw have have applied their vision and talent to building Dream Golf courses to life for the Keiser family. At Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, they created Bandon Trails, a stunning inland links built in the coastal forest of Oregon.  “Their 13-hole Bandon Preserve, set the bar for short courses, and their delicate work at Sheep Ranch captured the essence of its remarkable cliffside setting.  They built the original course at Sand Valley, working through massive, prehistoric sand dunes, and added another innovative short course, the Sandbox to their repertoire.

They placed seven original designs in Golf Magazine’s 2023-24 Top 100 World list, along with three transformative renovations. Coore and Crenshaw are known for their collaborative approach to building golf courses that taps into the skills of a remarkably artistic and skilled team of builders and shapers.

“THE KEISERS HAVE DONE IT AGAIN. THIS IS AN EXCEPTIONALLY GIFTED SITE.

THE COURSE

In preparation for his first solo design, Craig traveled overseas to study the great links and engage the features he tapped into for inspiration at Rodeo Dunes. The result is what you’d expect given Craig’s experience, and the fact he worked closely with Michael Keiser on early routings. The rumpled, rambling land is comfortably and naturally integrated into a design that feels like it has the qualities that only come with time.

“There’s a lot of similarities between what I’ve witnessed at places like North Berwick in Scotland and Rodeo Dunes, which is near Denver,” says Craig. “And those features are what make the property—and the course—so compelling.”

The land on Craig’s design contrasts nicely with the design being completed by Coore and Crenshaw nearby. Craig’s site utilizes large dunes like those found in Ireland, and emphasizes the drama of the land. The result is a breathtaking course where grand strategies are only matched by the incredible scale of the property.

JIMMY CRAIG

He’s worked alongside golf design genius for some of the best golf courses built in modern times, and Rodeo Dunes will be Jimmy Craig’s time to shine.

Craig, who grew up working at the Texas home course of Ben Hogan, started working for the design team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw when the pair came to Shady Oaks to undertake a bunker renovation. That led to Craig joining the Coore and Crenshaw shaping team, working on some real head-turning golf designs, including Bandon Trails, Sheep Ranch, and Sand Valley.

There’s no question Jimmy is one of the best we’ve had the good fortune to be involved with. He’s really very talented.
